PSRP researcher Fionnuala Ní Aoláin (TJI, University of Ulster) started her appointment as UN Special Rapporteur on the 1st of August. She is the new Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism.
Professor Ní Aoláin’s appointment follows an outstanding international academic career dedicated to international law, human rights law, national security law, transitional justice and feminist legal theory. She has previously been inter alia a representative at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia at domestic war crimes trials in Bosnia (1996-97), a Special Expert appointed by the UN Secretary General on gender equality in times of conflict and peacemaking, an OCHR and UN Women consultant in preparation for a study on reparations for conflict related sexual violence and an International Criminal Court’s Trust Fund for Victims’ appointed lead of an expert review on reparations to victims.
Professor Ní Aoláin has received numerous awards and honours for her outstanding research and scholarly activity.
